Tate Modern visit

The three artists who work with 3D media I chose was Cildo Meireles, Sarah Sze, and Yto Barrada. Being able to observe their works closely in person, it gave me a different impression from seeing it on the screen.

Babel by Cildo Meireles was a very tall structure, constructed with multiple radios of different varieties. The noise it produced was harsh to the ears due to the indefinite and incomprehensible voices/songs, however, somehow I stayed in this area the longest. I also really liked the way Cildo Meireless communicated his message, which is that there are an increase in miscommunications due to the fast moving trend and the amount of information on the internet. It made me think of individuality, which connects to my theme for this project. --> Harajuku culture, where people often represented their individuality through the power of fashion. - Cildo Meireles (2001) Babel [Radios, metal]. Seamless by Sarah Sze also gave me a different impression. Through the screen, I was expecting an abstract, sharp and complexed installation. However seeing them in person, it gave me a rather flowing-like, smooth and delicate impression, and I could sense the intricacies put into this piece through the thin, transparent strings used to hold the objects. The piece was constructed with very detailed objects such as toothpicks, and the wood that surrounded the room made me think of a toy railway, which I believe is why I came up with the word "flowing-like" when I saw it. I deeply enjoyed the work Palm Sign by Yto Barrada even more in person. I loved the brightness and the warmth created with colourful lightings, and I liked how the light bulbs were not neon - creating a soft, comfortable atmosphere. The damages on the light enhanced the nostalgic feeling. I learnt that this work was made to represent the everyday life in Morocco, and to promote the contemporary Morocco with the impact of tourist industry. How abandoned this light looks made me think of a possible background story of it, for example, it could have been used at a tourist spot but was taken away because it was now too old to be used..... or it may have been removed because of the mass tourism in Morocco.... and more.
